SCMR Oral History Project
In this presentation, Deborah Dobbins discusses how telling stories of pioneer African American Canadians can be a catalyst for reconciliation.
In 2016, the Shiloh Centre for Multicultural Roots (SCMR), located in Edmonton, received a grant to document stories of second and third generation African American Canadians whose families migrated from the United States to Alberta and Saskatchewan in the early 20th century.
Content from these interviews was used to create the documentary We Are The Roots. This project opened the door to start a conversation about the experiences of these families and the prejudice and discrimination that they continue to endure.
This presentation was part of the Excellence in Community Programming and Museums Panel at the 11th Canada’s History Forum, Connecting Communities Through History, held on January 27, 2019.
