LGBTQ Rights
My project is about LGBTQ rights and the community. The history of the pride flag, pride parades and LGBTQ social movements.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
I wanted to spread awarness about the LGBTQ community and help educate those who may not know the history of the LGBTQ peoples. I learned that in some countries you can be killed if you are part of the LGBTQ community. I also learned that not all LGBTQ people consider themselves to be part of the community. I learned where the Pride flag was created and who it was created by and that gay marriage only became legal in Canada in 2005.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
The most interesting thing I learned about LGBTQ rights was that even in Canada it was just over 10 years ago that my moms could be legally married.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
In comparison my life is with a lot less struggle. I can go to school where there is support for LGBTQ kids and their allies. I have never been mistreated due to my beliefs. There is a better understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ people then there was in the past. We have come a long way in creating equality but we still have a lot of work to do.
