Maurice Richard: how he became a symbol of cultural and political change

Maurice Richard was not only a famous hockey player, he is also a hero in Quebec. He started what was known as the Richard Riot which was the beginning to the Quiet Revolution in Quebec. His influence helped French-Canadians to voice their opinion and looking for ways to keep the heritage and culture intact.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I learned many thing during my research, but the most surprising thing I found out was that there was tension between the two languages during that time. I was shocked to find out how French Canadians where treated as second class during that time. Because of this I was inspired to find out more.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

One lesson I learned from this project is that we need to treat others the same way. Just because someone is different they should still have the same respect as others. Maurice Richard helped pave a way for language equality in Canada.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

During Maurice Richard's time, there was less opportunity for French Canadians. Now, French immersion is offered all over Canada for students like me. Hockey also had a big influence on Canadian culture as showed by Maurice Richard.
