The Famous Five

My project is about The Famous Five and how they wanted to change how women were only seen as underprivileged and weak in the 1920's. The Famous Five wanted people to have a different attitude towards women, so that women are seen as equal. They protested, they brought the issue to court and made it known to the world while being brave and standing up for what they believed in.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

It was interesting to find out that their case was turned down by the Supreme Court of Canada, but when they brought their case to the Supreme Court of England, life changed for women in Canada forever. The most interesting thing I learned about this topic is that the Famous Five got women to vote in Canada, but women in other countries are still fighting for their rights. It was more interesting to find out that women didn't have basic rights to begin with. Imagine how the lives of women would be now if the Famous Five hadn't have taken action.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

An important lesson that I've learned is that because of what the Famous Five fought for, it totally changed how women were treated and it was the reason they were able to voice out their rights. When Emily Murphy became a judge, she faced a lot of obstacles because women weren’t seen as capable of being a judge, but she became a judge no matter what others thought of her. An important lesson would be to always work hard and fight for things that you believe in like the Famous Five did. The most important lesson is to treat everyone equally no matter their gender, race, cultures and beliefs.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

In my life today, I am able to do all the things boys are capable of doing, but back then girls and women were forbidden from playing sports like football because it was un-lady like, now I am able to play any of the sports that I want to and so can all the females out there. I am also able to speak out my opinion when I know things are not right, but back then girls and women weren’t able to say anything about how they felt when they were treated unfairly simply because they were women, but the Famous Five spoke out for them as a group and got women the right to vote. Now it’s normal for a woman to have a job that a man would have, at that time Louise Mckinney was the first woman lawyer elected to the British Empire, but she had to go through a lot of judgement from other people, while being a role model to other women showing them to not care what others think . Now woman have the opportunity to choose whichever job they want, and don’t have to worry about discrimination and unfairness at work.
