S.S. Moyie

My project is on the S.S. Moyie, the last operating passenger sternwheeler in North America.  I studied the history of this ship, the way she was built, her crew, what she did and where she sailed. I also took a look at where she is today.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

It was interesting that the Moyie was re-routed so many times in her life which shows that she was very useful. Also, it was interesting to learn about the lives of Canadians in the early 1900s.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned that the Canadian Pacific Railway had a big impact in British Colombia and in Canada in general. The Moyie was a part of the CPR company that enabled the railway passengers to connect through BC's lakes. Without the S.S. Moyie, it would have been much harder to get to the heart of BC.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

One important difference is how much easier it is to get around the country today compared to the people who travelled on the S.S. Moyie. They used to travel for work and for pleasure though, just like we do today. The people in the early 1900s had fewer options for travel than I do!
