Immigration (from the West Indies)
“Nelly News” — Today’s Broadcast is about immigration from the West Indies to Canada. With special guest Wendell John-Baptiste as he explains his experience immigrating to Canada.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
I learned that lots of people in the West Indies had to leave their families behind when they came to Canada. Many immigrants came initially as domestic workers and found the cold weather very difficult.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
I learned that immigration is a privilege and also a right that was not always given to people of colour. I am so glad that the laws changed and Canada is now a multicultural country.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
Now when you come to Canada, people can be anything they want to be. We are not limited by the colour of our skin.
