Soldiers of the Soil

“Soldiers of the Soil” was the term used for young boys that wanted to be soldiers but too young to fight. Rather, they supported the soldiers fighting for their country, by farming potatoes to feed these soldiers.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

That young boys who wanted to be soldiers, may have been too young to fight. However, they played an important role in providing food to those fighting in the war.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

In addition to the soldiers fighting in the front line. There were many more soldiers supporting the war in many other ways, that we would not necessarily think of, such as farming.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

We now have more support for farming potatoes and shipping supplies to the world, due to no war, more potatoes and farming equipment.
