Prince Edward Island Provincial Heritage Fair

From Ireland to Prince Edward Island

I have researched my family tree to when my ancestors came from Ireland to Prince Edward Island.  It is a persevering history with struggles and successes, not unlike the history of Canada.  I am proud to be Canadian!

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The conditions my ancestors lived in on Prince Edward Island in the 1800's. I was able to locate a couple of remarks the enumerator made from the 1861 census that showed the hardships my family lived and worked through. I learned how to make Irish Soda Bread/Bannock by myself to serve at the PEI Provincial Heritage Fair 2015!

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

That no matter how hard life situations are, if you work hard you can overcome any difficulty. How brave my ancestors were to have traveled so far to immigrate to a new land. The legacy that my ancestors left behind.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My family and I live a very comfortable lifestyle that enables us to experience the world around us in a positive way. I have opportunities that my ancestors would not have dreamed of. But because of their perseverance, I have the life I live today. I am very thankful to all of them.
