By the Ghost Light

Wars, Memory, and Families
Reviewed by Joanna Dawson Posted July 23, 2024

Renowned actor, playwright, and arts advocate R.H. Thomson grew up surrounded by stories of war and valour. He is a descendant of many men and women who served in both world wars, and it is unsurprising, then, that he has dedicated much of his professional work to exploring and unpacking the myths of war.

His ambitious commemorative project The World Remembers — which aimed to list the names of all the soldiers who died during the First World War, regardless of class or nationality — was the only international project proposed during the conflict’s centenary. It was a massive undertaking and a study in the politics of social memory.

Thomson’s latest book, By the Ghost Light: Wars, Memory, and Families, is a captivating memoir that offers a glimpse into his life and work, alongside reflections on war and memory. As he considers the enduring cost and consequences of war, Thomson is haunted by the stories of his ancestors — which he has pieced together through letters, photos, mementos, and historical research.

A lyrical and poignant read, By the Ghost Light attempts to untangle the stories we tell about war and asks whether a different narrative could lead to a more peaceful future.
