Discover Banff: A Journey Through History, Wildlife, and Scenic Wonders

This project explores the rich history, diverse wildlife, and significant conservation efforts of Banff National Park in Canada. The video will highlight the park's development into a national treasure.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I have learned so many valuable lessons personally from the experience of researching the national treasure of Banff. The resilience of the ecosystem, the strategic business plan of the McCardell brothers and the expanse of land which houses numerous bucket list spots have all left a lasting impression on me. However, the most valuable lesson, both personally and for all Canadians, is the emphasis on conservation to preserve the natural park and its beauty. It is such a great opportunity for individuals from around the world to travel and witness the stunning views of Banff, but the amount of visitors that the park receives annually is bound to present its challenges. Taking land away from the environment and wildlife for human purposes has had a significant impact on the wild ecosystem. This has prompted new opportunities for innovations in the field of ecology and conservation. Specialists have come up with creative solutions to large issues that the natural environment faces. Furthermore, I would like to share with other Canadians to continue following the park rules and regulations as well as respecting the ecosystem when visiting Banff, as these are such important things for all people within the park to keep in mind. Doing our part in helping clean up when we can, keeping dogs on leashes and maintaining a respectful manner helps ensure the safekeeping of the park for future generations.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

In my research on Banff National Park, I found the natural aspects, including the wildlife and ecology, to be the most intriguing. I have a particular interest in the diverse life and ecosystems found in natural spaces. The opportunity to explore these topics in a unique and varied environment was truly exciting. To learn more about all the species of wildlife, the conservation efforts that keep populations thriving and the ecology of Banff was so fascinating. As well, I loved presenting the information within my video shown above. In addition to the natural aspects, I equally enjoyed learning about the conservation efforts within the park. It was a topic I wasn’t fully familiar with and I learned a lot including how the techniques developed in Banff are now being used around the world, such as wildlife over and underpasses, tracking cameras, monitoring species, regulated fires and other methods of conserving both the natural environment and wildlife. This shows that despite the impact humans may have, people are willing to solve problems to ensure the safeguarding of the natural habitat found within Banff. I hope that one day I am also able to put my work toward helping the wildlife and ecosystems in parks like Banff.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Banff dates back to the 1800s when the lifestyles of individuals were very different in comparison to the lives we lead today. During the development of the business side of the park, wealthy citizens of varying countries would travel to the park just for the chance to soak in the hot springs and take in the natural beauty. The opportunity to visit Banff was reserved only for the wealthiest individuals, but they were willing to pay outrageous prices because of the marketing they believed. For example, the McCardell Brothers advertised the hot springs they discovered with spiritual healing powers. Visitors thought that just by soaking in the mineral-rich waters, they could be cured of chronic illnesses such as paralysis. Today we know that not to be true, but the springs do provide a nice relaxing environment to soak worries away. Back in the 1800-1900s, a trip to Banff was more about luxury and high status than it was to go for hikes and participate in numerous recreational activities. In the present day, as someone who enjoys going to Banff periodically, I know that the experience gained from visiting the park is about more than just being a show of wealth. The countless activities that are available within Banff make any trip worthwhile and can create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. The beauty of the park has always inspired me and provided a place to enjoy the natural riches we are so grateful to have access to. This inspired me to do my project about Banff, and I hope this presentation has allowed others to fully appreciate its beauty as well as history.
