Hon. George Coles....not your ordinary politician

My project is about George Coles and how he came from humble beginnings to becoming the greatest politician in our Island history.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I did a lot of research on my own genealogy and found out that George Coles is my 7th great uncle. I am so proud to be related to such a brilliant man who changed laws for the better for the Island people.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned that George Coles opposed Confederation because he wanted the land to be given back to the Island people. Also George Coles passed the free education act so that all Islanders could have equal opportunities.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My life today is better than back in the1840’s. I get to go to school to receive my education. I am also surrounded by potato fields that Island farmers produce to earn a living and all of this is because George Coles fought for the Island people.
