The Battle of Beaver Dams
The Battle of Beaver Dams is a battle that occurred on June 24th, 1813. This battle has made heroes and heroines in Canadian history, like Laura Secord and the unsung Mohawk and Caughnawaga warriors.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
think the most interesting fact that I learned about my topic was that the majority of things written about how the battle was fought were untrue. One thing I found really interesting was that Laura Secord never travelled with a cow or travelled alone. Laura Secord had started off her journey with her niece and nephew, Elizabeth and Henry Secord, but both turned around - Elizabeth due to her poor health and Henry because he had work on the farm to do. Another interesting thing I had learned was about who fought the battle. The British received the credit for fighting but the the Mohawk and Caughnawana warriors were the ones that actually fought and won the battle.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
The lesson that I want to share with Canadians is that we need to share the true facts about the Battle of Beaver Dams. How the Mohawk and Caughnawana warriors did not get credit was disrespectful. If we could get the word out to other Canadians about how the warriors never received credit and how they were the ones who fought, we could find a way to give them the acknowledgment they deserve, a monument built in their honour would be a great place to start.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
My life is definitely different than the lives I studied in 1813 because of the technology we have now. In 1813 they would have to charge and ambush the enemy, and weapons like a musket would take a long time to reload. In this day and age we have more advanced weapons and tend to fight battles from a distance. My life is undoubtedly more advanced in 2017 because if this battle was going on right now, Laura Secord would not have to walk a very long journey to tell James Fitzgibbon the overheard news, but instead she could do something as simple as sending him an email or text.
