Life Stories & Legacies: Allan Asseltine

The Life Stories & Legacies Heritage Fair Project presents the biography of my grandfather, Allan Asselstine.  I learned a lot about his life, our family history, and how growing up in Canada was different for his generation.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing that I learned about what Grandpa did was travel by train to B.C. to look for work after the war. (I thought that he had always lived in Manitoba.)

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned that my Grandpa's childhood was much different than mine. Life in general was simpler when Grandpa was a young man. Life was also a lot harder for people.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My life is much different. He didn't have nearly as much as I do. He got fed, and there was not much else left. You could get a chocolate bar for 5 cents!
