The Roedde's

Have you ever thought how it was like to immigrate in the 19th century? How it was to open a business? The Roedde family was a perfect example of a middle class family in Canada, and as the first bookbinders in Vancouver.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

That there are so many artifacts of the Roeddes' things. I got the opportunity to look through them. It's amazing that these objects still exist.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned that we take living in Canada for granted. People had to work to live and thrive. It wasn't easy to make a living when you were different from everyone from everyone else.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I don't have to work everyday to live in Canada like the Roeddes' did. I am accepted in my community for who I am and I feel secure about my identity.
