Parliament Buildings

This project focuses primarily on the architecture of the Mutchmor Public School in Ottawa, which was built in 1895. It looks at the original details of the building and the changes which were made over the last 120 years. The building was expanded and renovated in 1911, 1920 and 1980. An addition is currently being built and is scheduled to be complete by this summer, 2015.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I learned that Mutchmor was 120 years old, has a rich history and has changed with the times. I have learned the history of how Mutchmor got its name.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

If you really look around a building carefully, it is much more interesting than if you glance at it quickly. I have learned to appreciate the architecture of old buildings and their history. I learned that Mutchmor was the oldest elementary school in Ottawa.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My life is very different that before. Girls now study with boys and the dress code is also very different. There are now fewer children in each class than there was before.
