Visual Signalling

Visual Signalling is a method of communication involving something that can be seen. It is used by Canadian soldiers today and has been used by the military for thousands of years.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The heliograph, messenger pigeon, and semaphore are very interesting methods of signalling. I liked using the mirror to catch the light to signal. I liked holding the pigeons and watching them leave their coop.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned how to use semaphore and the heliograph. I learned about the history of our local signal regiment and how hard their job was. Our local signalling regiment is the oldest in the British Commonwealth.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

It is much easier to signal today because all you have to do is send a text or email. You can send pictures and videos too. Anyone can do it.
