Our Yummy Past: The Evolution of Maple Syrup in Canada

Canada is famous for our MAPLE SYRUP! From the First Nations’ discovery of maple syrup, to the pioneer’s innovations, to modern day production, maple syrup has continued to be a strong part of Canada’s past and present!

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The First Nations' discovery and production of maple sap into syrup is creative and resourceful, with their use of the materials they had available. Maple syrup is also now found to be an antioxidant, which is good for you!

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

Maple syrup is a natural resource and is both a science and art. Canada is known around the world for this delicious treat and it unites us and connects us to our land.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

The method of making maple syrup has basically stayed the same, but with different tools and production methods. I feel lucky to be a Canadian with this rich heritage and am proud that maple syrup is a symbol of our great country!
