Russian Mennonite Immigration to Canada
This project tells the story of the Menonites and their immigration to Canada in the 1920s. It focuses on the story of my great-great Aunt Helena and is based on her childhood memories. This is the story of my family.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
My grandma had all these family documents that were very interesting. Some were in Russian. I learned a lot about the Tsar and the rise of communism in Russia.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
I've learned that sometimes life isn't fun. The Mennonites had many hardships. They stood up for what they believed.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
I think my life is better. I've never been really starving in my life. It took a lot longer to travel than now.
