My project explores Lake Athapapuskow which is a lake located in the Canadian Shield in Northern Saskatchewan/Manitoba. I learned how glaciers shaped the region, creating rocky landscapes and thousands of lakes. I also researched how Indigenous people used the lake for travel, fishing, and trade. One of the most interesting parts of my project was learning about the giant lake trout that made this lake famous. I made a mock fish out of wood with my dad showing just how big the trout in this lake can get. I also learnt about Pine Point Lodge, a fishing lodge on the lake that my family now owns. Lake Athapapaskow is important because it shows how Canada’s geography shapes communities, tourism, and recreations like fishing.

What sources and evidence did you consult for your project? What different perspectives did they provide on your topic?

I used books, maps, websites, and photographs. They all provided perspectives in different areas like environment, culture, history, and tourism.

What is the historical significance of your topic?

Lake Athapapuskow was important to Indigenous peoples and later communities to provide transportation, food, and resources. It became famous for tourism and fishing and is important part of Canada’s natural heritage.

Why did you choose this topic?

I chose this topic because my family became owners of Pine Point Lodge in 2024. I wanted to learn more about the lake and why it is such a special place.
