In my project I talked about how the sport of fencing works. I described what a piste is, where the sport of fencing takes place, the rules of engagement, and how a fencer gains points for victory. I also talked about and provided a brief history of fencing, the equipment and technology used in fencing, as well as fencing as an Olympic and Paralympic sport. I included information on two important Canadian Olympian fencers: Sherraine Schalm and Eleanor Harvey. Though Sherraine Schalm never won a medal in fencing, I talked about how great she still was and the inspiration behind Eleanor Harvey, who became Canada’s first ever fencing Olympic medalist in Paris 2024. I then talked about why I chose fencing as a topic. I am a fencer myself and have been fencing for the past couple of years. I enjoy fencing because I get to do things my parents tell me not too: run with sharp things, pick fights, and hit back!
What sources and evidence did you consult for your project? What different perspectives did they provide on your topic?
I searched a variety of different websites for statistical and personal information, checked out fencing books from my local library, interviewed my coaches, and listened to radio interviews on the atheletes I covered.
I also borrowed the fencing uniform, including the three types of swords, from my local fencing club and the electrical kit we use to hook us up to the point system.
What is the historical significance of your topic?
Eleanor Harvey made Canadian history by winning Canada’s first ever Olympic medal in fencing. No Canadian fencer, either in the men’s or women’s competition, has won an Olympic fencing medal before.
The people affected by her victory were young Canadians, and especially, young female athletes across Canada. I was certainly inspired by her accomplishment. It is important to see Canadians succeed in all sorts of different sports, not just hockey! This helps increase awareness and funding for young Canadian female athletes to pursue their dreams in sport.
Learning about Eleanor Harvey made me feel like if I work just as hard as she does, I can also accomplish my dreams!
Why did you choose this topic?
I chose this project because I am a fencer like Eleanor Harvey and I wanted share my interest in fencing to others. It’s not a sport you hear about that often and I think it’s really fun. I am also inspired by Eleanor Harvey, she’s silly just like me, and she makes me think every one can work hard and pursue their dreams.
