Louis Riel, Hero or Villain?

Throughout my research, I learned about his role as a leader of the Métis Nation and how he fought for the rights of the Métis people in Canada. The key people in my project were Louis Riel, the Métis community, and the Canadian government. Riel became an important leader because he stood up for Métis land rights, culture, and language during a time when many people were being treated unfairly. The main events I studied included the Red River Resistance and the North-West Resistance. These events showed how Louis Riel tried to protect the metis people and negotiate with the government. Some considered him a villain because he led rebellions against Canada, but others believed he was a hero for defending his people and fighting for justice. After researching both sides, my final response to the inquiry question was that Louis Riel was a hero. I believe he showed courage and leadership by standing up for the Métis people and helping protect their rights, identity, and future. 

What sources and evidence did you consult for your project? What different perspectives did they provide on your topic?

I used a website called 10 Métis quotes. This really helped me get a good perspective on the Métis, and gave me many primary documents.

What is the historical significance of your topic?

The historical significance of Louis Riel is very important in Canadian history because he helped defend the rights, culture, and land of the Métis Nation. In the short term, his leadership during the Red River Resistance led to the creation of Manitoba as a province and helped protect some Métis rights, such as language, religion, and land agreements. However, the North-West Resistance ended with conflict between the Métis people and the Canadian government, and Louis Riel was later executed for treason. This deeply affected the Métis community, who felt their voices and rights were ignored. In the long term, Louis Riel became a symbol of justice, Indigenous rights, and resistance against unfair treatment. His actions helped bring attention to the struggles of the Métis people and inspired future movements for Indigenous equality and recognition in Canada. Over time, many Canadians began to see him as a hero instead of a traitor. Today, Louis Riel is remembered for helping shape Canadian history and for fighting to protect the identity and rights of the Métis people.

Why did you choose this topic? 

We were learning about him in history class and I found it really interesting what he did and how he stood up for his people.
