On April 1, 1999 the map of Canada was re-drawn: the Northwest Territories divided into two territories to allow for the creation of Nunavut, a homeland for Inuit of Canada.
In this lesson, students will read about the foods and drink featured in the article “Nine Foods (and One Drink)” and then discuss how both settlers and Indigenous peoples used/transformed these foods.
This lesson teaches students about the history of Africville, Nova Scotia while also practicing the academic skills of attentive listening, note taking, and summarizing.
Students will apply aesthetic and historical thinking skills using the work of Canadian artist Kate Siklosi and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to develop an understanding of historical injustices.
