THE ORGANIZATION
Established as a national charitable organization in 1994, Canada’s National History Society (CNHS) is headquartered in Winnipeg with 16 full and part-time employees located across Canada. Canada’s History develops resources to promote popular interest in Canadian history and delivers, across multiple platforms: outreach, educational activities, and programs to engage Canadians. CNHS administers the Governor General’s History Awards and publishes Canada’s History magazine and Kayak: Canada’s History Magazine for Kids / Navigue dans l’histoire du Canada. The Society derives its annual revenue of $3.6 million in roughly equal parts from donors, magazine subscriber-members, and governments.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Between 12 and 15 directors are responsible for the governance of the organization through sound, ethical, legal and financial management policies. The board ensures the Society has adequate resources to advance its mission.
Directors may serve up to two 3-year terms and are appointed based on skills criteria and consideration of diversity, geography, and language.
EXPECTATIONS
- Attend board meetings via video conference. Typically 5 per year.
- August AGM in Winnipeg.
- Serve on at least one committee.
- Directors are expected to make the Society one of their top charitable donations each year.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Preference is given to individuals with some mix of the following:
- Governance and not-for-profit experience;
- Expertise/interest in Canadian history and thinking historically;
- Career expertise in legal, finance, publishing or human resources;
- Experience in fundraising, marketing and digital media; and/or
- Strategic planning and implementation.
