We wanted to know: why does history figure so prominently in a newspaper facilitating the present day sale of real estate?

Bruce Cherney has been editor of the Winnipeg Real Estate News for over twenty years and oversees the Heritage Highlights column which focuses on some aspect of local Winnipeg history.

According to Bruce, local history and real estate are natural companions.

"When you look at a home there is always a history about it — whether it is the people who lived in it, the street that it is on, or the neighbourhood it's in."

The WinnipegREALTORS® Association also does its part to popularize history. They are the inspiration behind the Citizens Hall of Fame, located in Assiniboine Park.

Originally, the association wanted to host an event that would recognize outstanding individual contributions to the City of Winnipeg. However, they soon realized that there was no shortage of events and also that events are fleeting. In fact, what Winnipeg was really missing was a permanent and public facility to honour outstanding Winnipeggers.

Here is Bruce being interviewed by Web Editor Tanja Hutter (9 mins, 20 secs):

If you'd like to read the streetcar story Bruce refers to in his podcast, here is “We’ve had it!” — the story of the last streetcars to ride the rails in Winnipeg (in four parts):
Part One

As I started into Part 1, I learned a new word - jitneys. In New York they would call them gypsies, I guess.

I was suprised to see how extensive the Winnipeg Real Estate News archive is. That's a resource I'll have to come back for.
