The centennial of the Great War has arrived. Over the course of the next four years Canadians will strive to remember and commemorate the soldiers that died during those tragic years. One of Canada’s momentous events during the Great War is the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
The Road to Vimy 2017 Lest We Forget project is designed to have Canada’s students become the custodians of the memory of Canada’s soldiers that were killed during the Easter weekend of April 1917. The project has three phases.
Phase 1: Each student will be provided with a Vimy soldier’s service personnel file to complete a biography. Students can use the Lest We Forget Project at Library and Archives to access war diaries, maps, and secondary sources. Exemplars and links can be found at http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/lest-we-forget/Pages/lest-we-forget-project.aspx.
Phase 2: Students will populate a specially designed database that will create a digital profile of “their” soldier. Each soldier profile will be digitally accessible to the world through the Road to Vimy app that will house every Canadian soldier killed at Vimy. The database can be accessed at www.lest-we-forget.ca. Each school will be given a passcode to populate the database.
Phase 3: A group of students have been selected to design and program the Vimy app using Apple iOS software. Students will design and write the code but will invite other students from across Canada to provide ideas and suggestions in the look and feel of the app. The app will showcase the research completed by participants.
The goal is to ensure that the approximately 3200 Canadians killed during the Battle of Vimy Ridge are remembered through a biography as well as a detailed digital profile. All of this will be completed by March 2017. If we work together with our students we can ensure that the sacrifice is remembered and their efforts are commemorated by the youth of our nation.
As we near the launch date of April 2017, teachers and students participating in our project will be offered different opportunities to participate in activities sponsored by various national organizations and institutions. Updates with specific details concerning these opportunities will be forwarded in the upcoming months. We are hoping to expand this teacher network so if you know other teachers that might want to be involved please have them contact me at email@example.com.
