Entry Information

  • Submitted as a classroom project, each student must write a maximum 500 word story and submit an illustration describing a personal experience with a Canadian national historic site (please note, it should be a national site, not a provincial or territorial site). The experience can either be real, or fictitious with strong factual elements. Teacher’s name, student’s name, school name, telephone number and email address must accompany the group of entries. Entries will be accepted by either online submission form or regular mail (see mailing address below).
  • There must be a minimum of 15 student submissions within the class to be considered “a classroom” project. A smaller class may join with another class from their school to create one eligible group entry. While there is no limit to the number of students who can participate in the contest, the number of prize recipients awarded per trip is limited to 40 due to space restrictions.
  • Entries must be submitted by a teacher from a recognized school in Canada K-12. Each class will be evaluated on the merits for their grade level; senior grades do not have an advantage over elementary grades.
  • Entry deadline is midnight CST, December 31, 2011.
  • Odds of winning will be determined by the total number of entries received.
  • The grand prize winning entry and the five regional prizes will be selected by a jury from all eligible entries received by Canada's History Society, publisher of Canada’s History magazine, whose decisions are final. No responsibility is assumed for delayed, lost, stolen, or misdirected entries. Contest entries are void if incomplete, not legible, or if they contain errors.
  • By entering this contest, the school agrees that any information sent to Canada’s History becomes the property of Canada's History Society and Canada’s History, to publish online or in the print magazine at their discretion and, should they win, a classroom photo may be posted and/or published.
  • Registering teacher will be contacted and notified if they’ve won any of the class field trips by January 16, 2012.
  • The field trips will all take place during the month of June 2012, in consultation with Parks Canada, subject to the availability of staff at the historic sites.
  • One grand prize and five regional prizes will be selected. The classroom teacher will be notified via phone/email within 2 days of the selection. The winner has 5 days from receipt to respond and confirm the acceptance of the prize. If the initial winner does not respond within this period or declines the prize, then the jury will select an alternate entry until there is a confirmed winner.
  • Contest is open to all Canadian classrooms, except for any individual teacher or student who is an immediate family member of employees of Canada's History Society, Kayak Magazine, Canada’s History Magazine, and Parks Canada. Subject to all applicable laws. Void where prohibited.
  • For residents of Quebec — Any litigation respecting the conduct or organization of a publicity contest may be submitted to the Regie des alcools, des courses et des jeux for a ruling. Any litigation respecting the awarding of a price may be submitted to the Regie only for the purpose of helping the parties reach a settlement.
