Annandale House and Oxford’s Own

George Tillson’s historic mansion

In the early 1800s, industrialist George Tillson founded a community that would bear his name — Tillsonburg, in Oxford County, Ontario. Tillson’s iron works venture fuelled the growth of the community. Out of this entrepreneurial drive came Annadale House, Tillson’s historic mansion.

Inside this National Historic Site are the rewards of successful industry. The house is beautifully constructed and one of the best examples of Aesthetic craftsmanship, with painted ceilings and handcrafted Victorian décor. A museum since the early eighties, the house now celebrates the distinctive style of its construction, and offers exhibitions that showcase the local history of Tillsonburg. Visitors are invited to tour the grounds and house, bring a picnic, and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The county of Oxford is also planning centennial memorials, Oxford’s Own, to commemorate the local men and women who served in the Great War (1914-1918). There are over a hundred events planned throughout the county over the next four years, some of which will be held at Annandale. To maximize your trip to Oxford County, please contact the Annandale museum to learn more about the schedule of Oxford’s Own.
