THIS IS OUR HISTORY: Celebrating 20 Years of Canada’s History Makers

Igniting change. Building confidence. Growing leaders.

Twenty years ago, the Governor General’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History were established to recognize Canada’s exemplary teachers who are leaders in the classroom.

Today the awards include writers, popular historians, scholars, museums and community groups and are recognized as our country’s top history honours, involving the leading agencies of Canada’s diverse history and heritage community.

These national award winners have shown us that history is more than names and dates and places and politics; history is the human experience, the victories uncelebrated, the voices silenced, the suffering untold or sacrifices forgotten. History is the people who came before us whose stories sometimes painful and raw, often inspiring and enlightening, offer multiple perspectives of our past, an ancestral inheritance that underscores our similarities and our uniqueness.

We hope you’ll join us for The History Makers Gala on Monday, November 28th, 2016 to celebrate the 2016 recipients of the Governor General’s History Awards and two decades of award-winning men and women who help us to understand what it means to be Canadian.
