Canada and the First World War

Canada's Great War AlbumCanada’s History magazine is marking the centennial of the First World War with several feature articles in its October-November 2014 issue and with the publication this fall of the book Canada’s Great War Album, edited by Mark Collin Reid and featuring photographs and stories submitted by readers along with essays by notable Canadians such as Peter Mansbridge, Charlotte Gray, and J.L. Granatstein.

Here we present a selection of currently available books for those who would like to explore the conflict in even greater detail. The titles listed below consider the factors leading to the onset of the war, its aftermath, and its effects upon the soldiers who fought in the “Great War” and the families and the country they left behind.

Most of these books have been reviewed in Canada’s History magazine or included among our website’s Featured Titles listings, and reviews of other titles are in progress. We hope these books will broaden readers’ understanding of the conflict.
