About the Award

The Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media: the Pierre Berton Award celebrates those who have brought Canadian history to a wider audience.


The recipient will receive $5,000 and a trip for two to Ottawa to receive their award at the Governor General’s History Awards at Rideau Hall in the fall. Recipients also attend the Canada’s History Forum and the History Makers celebration dinner, held in conjunction with the awards.

Who is Eligible

Individuals or organizations that have helped popularize Canadian history through such means as publications, film, radio, television, theatre, voluntarism or the web. For more information, please read the complete Rules and Criteria.


Complete the online nomination form to suggest an individual or organization for the award. Nominees will be contacted with more information about the award and the application process.

How to apply

Individuals or organizations wishing to apply for the award should use the online application form. Supplementary materials may be mailed in hard copy, if required.
