Society Senior & Administration Staff

Deborah Morrison

Publisher, President & CEO, Winnipeg

Deborah Morrison joined Canada’s History Society as president in 2002. Prior to that she spent eleven years working with the Historica Foundation of Canada and The CRB Foundation — Heritage Project, coordinating the launch of the well-known Heritage Minutes, and developing many of their educational and outreach programs including the Heritage Fairs program which today continues with Canada’s History Society support. During her tenure she has been actively involved in the broader history and heritage community, and currently serves as a member of the Manitoba Government’s Heritage Grants Advisory Council. Ms. Morrison is also the current Chair of Magazines Canada, the national industry association for magazines and has been involved in a number of industry association activities both nationally and in Manitoba. Raised in Winnipeg, she earned a BA in Political Science from Carleton University in Ottawa and an MBA (Executive) from the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University in Montreal.

Linda Onofreychuk

Executive Assistant, Winnipeg

Linda Onofreychuk joined the History Society in 2004. She brings to the Society several years experience as an Executive Assistant. Previous employment at the Winnipeg Library Foundation has also provided Linda with expertise in fund development and event planning. Prior to her working for not–for–profit organizations she held a position in the Public Affairs Department for Canada Safeway Limited. Working in these types of environments has engaged Linda in providing many volunteer hours with various groups.

Patricia Gerow

Director, Finance and Administration, Winnipeg

Patricia Gerow obtained her Certified Management Accountant designation in 2000. Prior to joining the History Society, she worked in a variety of industries including transportation, warehousing, agriculture, construction and property insurance. She also serves as Treasurer for the Prairie West Area of Girl Guides of Canada and is the past Treasurer for the Manitoba Provincial Rifle Association (1989 to 2003).

Danielle Chartier

Marketing and Circulation Manager , Winnipeg

Danielle joined Canada's History in 2001 as a Member Services Representative, following a long career in banking. Since that time, the Society has gone through significant changes, most notably the conversion of its circulation department and the launch of Kayak magazine. As Marketing and Circulation Manager, Danielle supervises the fulfillment services, while also assisting with both fundraising and subscription campaigns. In addition to the Society's fundraising activities, she has also done volunteer work for the Manitoba Lung Association and the Manitoba Kidney Foundation.

James Gillespie

Art Director, Canada’s History and CanadasHistory.ca, Winnipeg

James Gillespie joined Canada's History in 2009 as Web Designer. He became the Art Director for Kayak in December 2010, but still maintains his role in New Media projects.

Andrew Workman

New Media Designer, Winnipeg

Andrew has been with Canada's History since 2011. His role as New Media Designer includes graphic design for web and print publications, interactive and UX design, video production and editing, and content development. His career as a creative professional has spanned the fields of architecture, branding, publishing and printing.

Mark Reid

Editor-in-Chief; Director, Content Development, Winnipeg

Formerly the assistant news editor at CanWest News Service in Winnipeg, Mark is a graduate of both Dalhousie University and the University of King's College with extensive experience as a journalist and editor in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Alberta, and Manitoba. His editorial background includes co-ordinating and executing national news coverage for CanWest's 11 major dailies; overseeing the development and launch of the University of Calgary's award-winning weekly newspaper; and editing OnCampus Quarterly magazine.

Nelle Oosterom

Senior Editor, Winnipeg

Previously a senior copy editor at CanWest News Service in Winnipeg, Ms. Oosterom also worked at CBC Radio in Manitoba and the Canadian Press national news service in both Manitoba and Newfoundland, where she held key reporting and editing positions–most notably, serving as CP's Winnipeg Bureau Chief. A graduate of Niagara College's journalism program, Ms. Oosterom began her reporting career at the Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal. She also attended the University of Manitoba, where she majored in political science and history.

Phil Koch

News and Reviews Editor, Winnipeg

Phil coordinates the Currents and Reviews sections of Canada’s History magazine as well as online news and books coverage. An editor, writer, and part-time graduate student, he has worked on several arts and culture magazines and journals, including co-founding and co-editing the culture magazine Tart. Phil was a copy editor with the Canwest News Service and served in several capacities with the Canadian university student press, winning the 2006 Canadian Association of University Teachers Award for Excellence in Education Journalism.

Nancy Payne

Nancy Payne received both her Bachelor and Master of Journalism from Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario. Ms. Payne brings to our team extensive experience in writing for young readers, most recently as editor of the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s publications WILD and Canadian Wildlife/Biosphère.

New Media

Joel Ralph

Director, Audience Development and User Engagement, Winnipeg

Joel Ralph is a passionate public historian working to share his love of history with a wider audience and community. After graduating from Queen’s University in Kingston with an honours degree in History he completed the Master’s in Public History program at the University of Western Ontario. Over the past six and a half years he has worked with Canada’s History in a variety of roles from intern and program coordinator, to Education and Outreach Manager and New Media Manager.

Tanja Hütter

New Media Editor, Winnipeg

Tanja Hütter began with Canada's History in 2003 as Web Editor. In addition to overseeing CanadasHistory.ca, she was responsible for revitalizing the Beaver Index and expanding it to include Kayak articles and GG-award-winning lesson plans. This online resource contains over 16,000 records covering content from October 1920 through to December 2010. Ms. Hütter was also the project coordinator for Fur Trade Stories, a collection of primary and secondary resources related to fur trade history and the Hudson's Bay Company.

Specializing in International Relations and German at the University of Manitoba, her more noteworthy accomplishments prior to joining the Society include being Associate Editor of the Encyclopedia of Natural Health (a 1998 Benjamin Franklin Award winner) and Editor of Artstar.com, a content-rich website with sophisticated e-commerce functionality devoted to everything art.

Jean-Philippe Proulx

Education and Community Coordinator, Montréal

Jean-Philippe joined Canada's History in 2010. After completing a B.A. (History) in 2000 at Laval University, he obtained two diplomas in art history and education before finishing in a Master's in architecture history in 2004 (also at Laval). Over the past few years he has worked for the Conseil du patrimoine religieux du Québec, the Historica foundation and the University of Montreal. His experience with these organization has been in the areas of research, event planning and program coordination.

Joanna Dawson

Community Engagement Coordinator, Winnipeg

A Newfoundlander/Winnipegger, Joanna joined Canada’s History in 2011 after obtaining her MA in Public History from Western University. She has worked and volunteered in the heritage sector, gaining experience in collections, research, exhibition, and interpretation, as well as a good insight into the opportunities and challenges facing heritage institutions today. Joanna supports the Society’s growing awards and educational programs, and coordinates content for the Education channel at CanadasHistory.ca.
